OUR INSIDER TIP FOR YOUR STAY IN LÜNEBURG:
HOTEL, RESTAURANT & DISTLLERY `WYNDBERG`
History of the building
Set between the Liebesgrund park and the historic city centre with its famous Town Hall, Wyndberg Hotel is the new address for visitors to Lüneburg. A gabled house erected in the year 1438 forms the core of the current building; most of the original cellar and the underground vaults added later still remain.
It was built for the “Syndikus”, the legal expert working for Lüneburg City Council. In the 18th century the gable was pulled down in order to extend the house. Further alterations were made in the 19th and early 20th century. The City’s Department of Education and Culture occupied the building until 2006, after which it stood empty.
Old-world charm and modern comforts
Picturesquely set on a slope overlooking the historic centre of Lüneburg, this listed building dating back to 1438 has been renovated from top to bottom with loving care and attention to detail. The rear of the building borders the old town wall which now forms the edge of the cosy “Liebesgrund” park, a popular place to take a stroll. While retaining its old-world charm, the Wyndberg offers all modern conveniences and a home from home to the discerning guest. Situated behind Lüneburg Town Hall - itself the starting point for shopping malls and streets - our hotel is only a short walk away from Lüneburg’s sights. It will appeal especially to those who would like to explore Lüneburg on foot. The hotel has its own distillery and a high-class restaurant. Our chef, Dominik Lang, and his experienced team are happy to offer you delicious, fresh and regional dishes.
The distillery
The American comedian W.C. Fields was convinced that, “A man who loves whisky ... can’t be all that bad.” And indeed, whisky stands for time-honoured traditions, a special attitude to life, a hint of luxury. This noble, spicy spirit will be available from Wyndberg Distillery, crafted in the new building and matured for at least three years in the historic vaulted cellar. Wyndberg Whisky Distillery is a joint venture involving the owner of the building Stephan Scheer and the operating partners Marc Blancke and Christopher Weckler. The bar of the hotel will also stock more than 60 different whiskies.
