LIBESKIND AUDITORIUM
WELCOME TO LÜNEBURG
Visit Lüneburg and enjoy the atmosphere and diversity of a historic town with a medieval town centre, which is nevertheless young at heart. Lüneburg is a cultural hub 365 days a year, practically round the clock: from sightseeing and green parks to music events, festivals and colourful markets. Our many attractions are all close by. Visit the Lüneburg museums and the Stintmarkt (Stint Market) with its harbour, the Alter Kran (Old Crane) and the historic Salzewer (salt cog). Relax at one of the many cafés and restaurants in the town centre, and enjoy the view of the river and the historical houses. Indulge in Lüneburg specialities, explore the town and region on foot or by bike, and take the opportunity to find that special gift in our little, family-owned shops. We have a variety of town tours and activities, both in Lüneburg and on the Lüneburg Heath just outside the town, on offer. All this makes our salt town ideal for a holiday or weekend break.
Leuphana University Lüneburg is a genuine campus university that was spatially rebuilt in the 1990s on a former barracks site dating from the 1930s. On the approximately 15 hectare site, which is partly park-like, you will find the old brick barracks buildings, the newly built lecture halls and the library, as well as the university's new central building, which opened in March 2017. World-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind designed it as a counterpoint to the austere, military-style structure of the complex. With a height of around 37 metres and 13,000 square metres of floor space, it is the dominant building on campus. The building houses a research centre, a student centre and a seminar centre. Also part of the building is an Auditorium Maximum. It offers space for 1,100 visitors.
The Libeskind Building also stands for the reorientation of the university that took place in 2007. Its study model, unique in Germany, consists of a College for first degree studies, a Graduate School with interlinked master's and doctoral programmes, and the Professional School for continuing education. Four academic initiatives shape the university's subject spectrum: educational research/teacher training, management and entrepreneurship, cultural research and sustainability research.
There are 9,500 young people studying at Leuphana. Around 600 of the 1,000 Leuphana employees are academics, 155 of whom are professors.
