White, precious and coveted worldwide, salt once brought Lüneburg great wealth. The magnificent gabled brick houses in the town centre still bear witness to this. Fortunately, the old salt town was largely spared the wars and catastrophes occurring elsewhere. Consequently, the medieval townscape has mostly been preserved.

Visit the Deutsches Salzmuseum (German Salt Museum) to see exactly how salt was produced. Learn more about Lüneburg’s history on one of the numerous town tours, or visit the town hall, the water tower, the old town of Lüneburg or the Stint.
